The main highways in Georgia are good, but the places people fly in for are higher up: Juta and Truso in Kazbegi, Ushguli in Svaneti, the Abano pass to Tusheti, the Goderdzi pass in Adjara, David Gareja on the steppe. Do I really need a 4x4 in Georgia?
Not for the main highways, Tbilisi, Kakheti, Batumi or Mestia in summer. You do for Tusheti, Ushguli, Juta, Truso, David Gareja and for mountain passes in winter, and a 4x4 gives peace of mind in changeable mountain weather.
How much does a 4x4 rental cost in Georgia?
From $65 a day for compact SUVs (Renault Duster, Jeep Renegade, Subaru Forester), $75 to $80 for the 4Runner, X-Terra, Pajero and Land Cruiser 100, and $100 to $120 for the Wrangler, Prado, Land Cruiser 200 and 4Runner V.
Can I drive a rental 4x4 to Tusheti?
Yes, with a body-on-frame off-roader and some experience; the Abano pass road is open roughly from June to early October. Tell us in advance so we can match the car to the route.
Are winter tyres and snow chains included?
Winter tyres are fitted in season. Snow chains are available for $5 a day and can be added in the booking form.
Can I take a 4x4 to Armenia?
Yes, Armenia is the only country our cars may enter, with prior notice so we can prepare the documents. Russia, Turkey and Azerbaijan are not permitted.
