Telavi is the capital of Kakheti, Georgia's wine region, about 90 km east of Tbilisi across the Gombori pass (1.5 to 2 hours by car). Pickup in Tbilisi city centre has no delivery fee and Tbilisi Airport costs $30 per end, so many travelers collect the car in Tbilisi, drive the 1.5 hours to Telavi and keep the car for the whole trip. Telavi delivery is for those who arrive in Kakheti first, for example after a wine tour or by air.
Can I drive to Tusheti with a rental car from Telavi?
Only with a 4x4 and only from about June to early October, when the Abano pass (2,850 m) is open. The road from Pshaveli to Omalo is gravel and steep; choose the Mitsubishi Pajero or Land Cruiser Prado and tell us your plan when you book.
