Tusheti by 4x4: the Abano pass, and why the car matters

Tusheti is the most remote region of Georgia that you can still reach by car: a national park of tower villages and alpine valleys behind the main Caucasus ridge, open only in summer. The single road in starts at Pshaveli near Telavi and climbs 40 km of gravel switchbacks to the Abano pass at 2,850 m, then drops for 30 km to Omalo. There is no asphalt, no barrier, no fuel and, on a bad day, no visibility. The BBC once listed it among the world's most dangerous roads; driven slowly, in daylight, in the right car, it is one of the best days you will have in Georgia.

The right car means a genuine 4x4 with high clearance, low-range gears and good tyres. Our Mitsubishi Pajero, Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser 200 do this road every summer; we do not recommend the crossover SUVs (RAV4, Outlander, Forester) for Tusheti. Tell us it is a Tusheti trip when you book: we check the spare, the jack and the tyres, and we give you the road status the morning you leave.

  • Season: roughly June to early October, weather permitting
  • Distance: Tbilisi to Omalo about 190 km, 6 to 7 hours with stops
  • Fuel: last station in Telavi or Akhmeta, none in Tusheti

Suggested plan

Three days in Tusheti by car

01

Day 1: Tbilisi or Telavi to Omalo

Fill the tank in Telavi, turn off at Pshaveli and climb through the forest to the Abano pass. Descend to Omalo (1,900 m) and sleep in a guesthouse in Upper Omalo below the Keselo towers.

02

Day 2: Dartlo, Kvavlo and the Pirikiti valley

Gravel road along the Pirikiti Alazani to Dartlo (the stone village with the medieval court), then on foot or by car to Kvavlo, Chesho and Parsma. Back to Omalo for the night.

03

Day 3: Shenako, Diklo and the road down

Morning at Shenako church and Diklo, then the pass again before the afternoon clouds. Sleep in Telavi or continue to Sighnaghi; the 4x4 returns to Tbilisi the next day.

Questions

Tusheti by 4x4: questions before you go

What travelers ask us about the road, the season and the cars. Anything else: WhatsApp us the morning you leave for the road status.

When is the road to Tusheti open?

The Abano pass usually opens in late May or June and closes with the first heavy snow in October. Exact dates change every year; the Roads Department announces openings and closures, and we tell you the current state when you book.

Can I drive to Tusheti in a normal car?

No. The road from Pshaveli over the Abano pass (2,850 m) to Omalo is 70 km of gravel, switchbacks and water crossings. A real 4x4 with high clearance is required; tell us it is a Tusheti trip when you book, because not every SUV on the fleet is allowed on this road.

How long does the drive from Telavi to Omalo take?

About 4 to 5 hours for the 70 km from Pshaveli, plus 30 minutes from Telavi to Pshaveli. Leave early: afternoon rain and fog on the pass are common, and you want daylight for the descent into Omalo.

Which car should I rent for Tusheti?

Mitsubishi Pajero ($80 a day), Land Cruiser Prado ($110) or Land Cruiser 200 ($135). The Jeep Wrangler ($100) also copes well. Tell us it is a Tusheti trip when you book so we can confirm tyres and a spare.

Is there fuel and phone signal in Tusheti?

No petrol station: fill up in Telavi or Akhmeta and arrive with at least half a tank; Omalo to Dartlo and Shatili-side villages add 60 to 100 km of driving. Mobile signal exists around Omalo and is patchy elsewhere; download offline maps.

Can I pick up the 4x4 in Telavi instead of Tbilisi?

Yes. GO Car Rental delivers to Telavi Airport or Telavi city centre for $120 per end, which puts you 30 minutes from the start of the pass. Most travelers still pick up in Tbilisi and drive the two hours over Gombori.
