Every winter the same question arrives on our WhatsApp at two in the morning: how do I get from Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri with skis, kids and a tired head? This guide answers it as a driver would. The road from Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri is 135 km and about two hours in normal conditions. It is paved all the way, cleared every day, and still the one drive in Georgia that deserves a plan. Below you will find the route, the timing, the pass rules, a cost example and the cars we hand over for it.
Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri: the route in five stages
First, you leave the airport on the ring road and skirt the city to the north. Then you join the Georgian Military Highway at Mtskheta, about 40 minutes from the terminal. From there the road follows the Aragvi valley north.
- Airport to Mtskheta (35 km, 40 min). Motorway and ring road, the easiest part of the trip.
- Mtskheta to Zhinvali and Ananuri (45 km, 40 min). A wide valley road along the turquoise reservoir. Ananuri fortress is the classic photo stop.
- Ananuri to Pasanauri (25 km, 25 min). Still flat and green, with the last big petrol stations on the way.
- Pasanauri to Kvesheti (15 km, 15 min). The valley narrows and in winter the snow line usually starts here.
- Kvesheti to Gudauri (15 km, 25 min). The climb: hairpins, avalanche galleries and the resort at about 2,200 m.
In summer the whole run takes two hours with one stop. In January, after fresh snow, allow three. Above Gudauri the road continues over the Jvari pass to Kazbegi, which our Gudauri and Kazbegi car rental page covers in detail, including the distances table and the ski-season steps.
When to land and when to drive
Many flights reach Tbilisi between midnight and 5 a.m. Our colleague meets them all at arrivals, so the car is never the problem. The road is. The climb above Pasanauri in the dark, with fresh snow and lorries, is not how a holiday should start. So our honest advice for Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri is simple. Land at night, sleep in Tbilisi, and drive up after breakfast. You will see the valley, the road will be cleared, and you reach the lifts by lunch.
If you land in daylight, go straight up. Leave the airport by 3 p.m. in December and January, when it gets dark around 5:30. Also check the pass status before you leave. We do it for you if you message us.
Winter rules on the Gudauri road
The patrol police manage the mountain section in heavy snow. When conditions are bad, they let through only 4x4 cars or cars with chains. Sometimes they close the road for a few hours until the ploughs finish. In practice this happens on a handful of days each season.
- Tyres. Our cars for the mountains run on winter tyres in season. Tell us at booking that you go to Gudauri.
- Chains. Snow chains cost $5 a day. Book them with the car, because you cannot buy them at the police post.
- Fuel. Fill up in Tbilisi or Pasanauri. Gudauri has a station, but do not count on it late in the evening.
- Speed. Cameras work in winter too. The travellers handbook lists the limits and fines.
- Parking. Hotels have car parks, and parking at the lifts is free. Face downhill and lift the wipers overnight.
Rental car or transfer from Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri?
A shared or private transfer drops you at the hotel and leaves. That suits a pure ski week. However, most of our winter customers want more. They want a day in Kazbegi under the snowy Gergeti church, a lunch in Pasanauri, or two city days in Tbilisi before the flight home. A car makes all of that possible without a second booking.
| Transfer | Rental car | |
|---|---|---|
| Door to door at any hour | Yes | Yes, with our 24/7 meet and greet |
| Kazbegi, Ananuri or Tbilisi days | Extra trips to book | Included in your plan |
| Skis and family luggage | Depends on the vehicle | SUVs and 7-seaters in the fleet |
| Snow on the pass | The driver decides | You choose the time, we check the pass for you |
| Cost for 2 to 5 people, one week | Two transfers plus local taxis | 10% off for the week, see the example below |
What the trip costs: a real example
Here is a typical ski week. You pick up a Subaru Forester at Tbilisi Airport, keep it for seven days, and return it to the airport. The Forester costs $65 a day, and a rental of 5 days or more gets 10% off, so seven days come to $410. Then the airport handover adds $30 at pickup and $30 at return, plus the $20 service fee. So the total is $490 before fuel, and snow chains add $5 a day if you want them.
You pay 15% online to confirm and the rest at the car. The refundable deposit of about $200 comes back when you return the car. Insurance and unlimited mileage are included, and an extra driver is free for the first 3 days. Every fee sits on the car rental prices page, and the booking page shows them separately before you pay.

Pickup at Tbilisi Airport: how it works
Give us your flight number when you book. Our colleague tracks the flight and waits at the arrivals exit with a sign, at any hour. Then you walk to the car together, check it, sign the contract and leave the deposit. The whole handover takes about ten minutes. The Tbilisi Airport pickup page explains the meeting point step by step. Note that we have no delivery point in Gudauri itself, so every ski trip starts in Tbilisi.
Questions about the drive
How long is the drive from Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri?
About two hours for 135 km in dry weather. After heavy snow, allow three hours, and more if the police hold traffic at the post below the resort.
Do I need a 4x4 from Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri?
From December to March, yes, we recommend one. On most days a car with winter tyres gets up. However, on storm days the police may allow only 4x4s or cars with chains. In summer any car works, including the Prius.
Can I drive on to Kazbegi?
Yes. Stepantsminda is 40 km beyond Gudauri over the Jvari pass. In winter the pass closes more often than the road to Gudauri, so check with us that morning.
Can I return the car somewhere else?
Yes. Many skiers fly home from Kutaisi or finish the trip in Batumi. The locations and fees page lists every handover point and its fee.
