Rental Car Insurance in Georgia Explained: What Is Covered, the $200 Deductible and the Police Report Rule

Rental car insurance in Georgia confuses more people than any other part of booking a car. What is included, what the deductible means, and what happens after a scratch. This post explains our own cover in plain words. The legal text is on our terms and conditions page and the short answers on the FAQ page; here we explain how it works in real life.

Updated 9 October 2026. Prices and rules checked against our booking system on that date.

What rental car insurance in Georgia includes with us

Every rental price includes standard cover, provided by the car supplier, who insures every car. That cover has four parts.

  • Third-party liability. Damage you cause to other cars, property or people.
  • Road traffic accidents. Damage to our car in a collision, with a deductible of $200.
  • Theft. If the car is stolen, you are not paying for the car.
  • Driver and passenger accident protection. Personal cover for the people in the car.

There is nothing to add at the desk and no upsell, which is rare for rental car insurance in Georgia. The price you see on the booking page is the price with insurance.

The $200 deductible, and why the deposit is $200 too

The deductible (also called the franchise or excess) is the most you pay for a covered accident: $200. That is why the refundable deposit at pickup is also about $200. If nothing happens, you get the whole deposit back when you return the car. If there is a covered accident, the deposit pays the deductible and the insurance pays the rest. So the deposit is not a fee; it is the deductible waiting in case it is needed.

What is not covered

Honesty matters more here than anywhere else, so here is the list from our terms. The insurance does not cover:

  • Interior damage, tyres and certain exterior parts such as mirrors and glass.
  • Damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Off-road driving against our instructions, for example taking a sedan up a 4x4 track.
  • Damage in breach of the terms: an unnamed driver, towing, racing, or leaving the country without our documents.
  • Any accident without an official police report, because the insurer will not accept the claim without one.

For these cases the renter pays the repair, and the deposit is used first. In our experience the common ones are a kerbed tyre and a mirror on a narrow mountain road. Both are avoidable with a little patience.

The one rule that protects you: call 112 first

After any accident, even a small one, do not move the car. Call the traffic police on 112 and let them document the scene. Then message us. With the police report, the claim is simple and you pay at most the deductible. Without it, the insurance can refuse the claim, and that turns a $200 problem into a $2,000 one. This is the single most important sentence in this post.

How handover protects you too

At pickup our colleague photographs the car with you. We note every existing scratch on the contract. Then you sign and leave the deposit. At return we check the same photos together. In practice, most returns take five minutes and the deposit comes back at drop-off. We recommend you take your own photos as well, including the tyres and the windscreen, and keep them until the deposit is back.

Rental car insurance in Georgia: questions we get every week

Can I buy zero-deductible cover?

Not at the moment. The $200 deductible is the same for every car in the fleet, which keeps the pricing simple.

Does my credit card insurance work in Georgia?

Sometimes, for the deductible. Many premium cards exclude certain countries or certain vehicle classes, so check with the card issuer before you rely on it. Our cover applies either way.

Is Armenia covered?

Yes, when we have prepared the border documents in advance. Crossing without them voids the insurance. See our Georgia to Armenia guide.

What if a stone cracks the windscreen on the motorway?

Glass is in the list of parts the insurance does not cover, so the repair is charged at cost. It is rare, and it is cheap in Georgia compared with Western Europe.

What about a flat tyre in the mountains?

Tyres are not covered either. Ask us to check the spare wheel with you at handover; for Tusheti and Ushguli we do it as standard.

In short, rental car insurance in Georgia with us means one simple rule set: $200 is the most you pay for a covered accident, and a police report keeps it that way.
