Can You Drive a Rental Car from Georgia to Turkey, Azerbaijan or Russia? What Works and What Does Not

Can you drive a rental car from Georgia to Turkey, Azerbaijan or Russia? With our cars, no. The only border you can cross with a GO Car Rental vehicle is the one with Armenia, and only with documents we prepare in advance. This post explains why, what the alternatives are, and how the Armenia trip works. For the Armenia route itself, read our Georgia to Armenia by car guide.

Updated 9 October 2026. Prices and rules checked against our booking system on that date.

Why you cannot drive a rental car from Georgia to Turkey

Three reasons, and they apply to Azerbaijan and Russia as well.

  • Insurance. Our cover is valid in Georgia, and in Armenia with the extra documents. Outside those two countries the car is uninsured, which is a breach of the terms.
  • Customs. Turkish and Azerbaijani customs require the registered owner or a notarised power of attorney, temporary import papers and, for Turkey, a Green Card equivalent. We do not issue these for Turkey or Azerbaijan.
  • Russia. The Larsi border is open, but Georgian-registered rental cars are not permitted to cross for Russia under our terms, and the insurance does not apply there.

Taking the car out of Georgia without our written permission voids the insurance and is a breach of contract. So please do not try it at the border; the customs officers check the papers and you will be turned back anyway.

What works instead

You want toHow people do it
Visit Turkey from BatumiDrive to Sarpi (15 km from Batumi), leave the car on the Georgian side, walk across, take a Turkish taxi or dolmus to Hopa or Trabzon
See BakuFly from Tbilisi (about an hour); the land border for foreigners has been closed since 2020, so check the current status before you plan a train or a bus
Drive Georgia and ArmeniaOur Armenia option: Tbilisi to Yerevan in about five hours via Sadakhlo, with our documents
Go to RussiaNot possible with a rental car; the Larsi crossing is for private cars and buses

So when people ask whether they can drive a rental car from Georgia to Turkey, the practical answer is Batumi plus a walk across Sarpi. The Batumi car rental page explains delivery to the airport or your hotel.

The Armenia exception, step by step

  1. Tell us at booking that you plan to cross into Armenia and on which dates.
  2. We prepare the notarised power of attorney and the border papers. This needs a few days, so book early.
  3. At the Sadakhlo or Bagratashen crossing you pay the Armenian road fees and temporary import at the booth.
  4. Armenian third-party insurance is sold at the border; buy it, it is cheap.
  5. Come back the same way. A one-way drop in Armenia is not possible.

Which car? Any sedan handles the main road to Yerevan. For Dilijan, Lake Sevan and the Selim pass, a crossover is more comfortable. Our which car for which trip guide compares them.

Questions about driving a rental car from Georgia to Turkey and the other borders

Can I drive to Turkey if I buy my own insurance?

No. The problem is not only insurance; it is the customs paperwork for a car you do not own. We do not issue it for Turkey.

Is the Armenia paperwork expensive?

Ask us when you book and we tell you what the documents cost for your dates and your car, before you pay anything.

What happens if I drive a rental car from Georgia to Turkey anyway?

The insurance is void from the moment the car leaves Georgia, and you are liable for the full value of the car. The deposit does not limit that liability.

Can I at least drive to the Sarpi border and park?

Yes. Sarpi is a normal Georgian road. Park on the Georgian side and walk across; many Batumi visitors do exactly this for a day in Hopa.

So the rule is simple: Georgia and Armenia yes, with notice; Turkey, Azerbaijan and Russia no. Plan the Turkish day from Batumi on foot, and keep the car for the Caucasus.
