Wild camping in Georgia with a rental car is legal, common and one of the best ways to see the mountains: Georgian law allows camping on most public land outside protected-area core zones, and the country is full of valleys where nobody minds a tent. This post covers the rules, the best spots by car, sleeping in the vehicle, and what we ask of you with our cars. For the vehicles, see the 4x4 and SUV rental page.
Updated 9 October 2026. Prices and rules checked against our booking system on that date.
Wild camping in Georgia with a rental car: the rules
- Public land. Camping is allowed outside towns, fenced land and the strict zones of national parks. Ask at a house if you are near a village; the answer is usually a glass of wine.
- National parks. Lagodekhi, Borjomi-Kharagauli, Tusheti, Kazbegi and Vashlovani have designated camping spots and visitor centres; register there, it is free or a few lari.
- Fire. Only in existing fire rings, never in summer in the dry east. Carry a stove.
- Border zones. No camping on the ridges near the Azerbaijani and Russian borders without permission; the police patrol them.
- Rubbish. Take everything out. Georgian mountain villages have no collection.
Best wild camping spots you can reach by car
| Place | Access | Car | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Juta and the Chaukhi valley (Kazbegi) | 20 km gravel from Stepantsminda | Crossover or 4x4 | Meadows under the Chaukhi towers, campsite and guesthouses |
| Truso valley | Gravel track off the Military Highway | 4x4 | Mineral springs, travertines, an empty valley |
| Shaori reservoir (Racha) | Paved to the shore | Any car | Lakeside forest, our Racha post has the route |
| Tabatskuri and Paravani lakes | Gravel from Bakuriani or Ninotsminda | Crossover or 4x4 | High plateau lakes, cold nights even in July |
| Udabno and the Gareja steppe | Rough road from Sagarejo | Crossover | Desert sunsets; stay off the border ridge |
| Omalo and the Tusheti valleys | The Abano pass, June to October | Real 4x4 | The best camping in the country, see our Tusheti guide |
Sleeping in the rental car
We have no objection to sleeping in the car, and plenty of customers do it in the Sienna, the Quest or the big SUVs with the seats folded. Three things we ask: no smoking inside, no cooking inside, and return the car clean. The Land Cruiser 200 and the Pajero have flat load floors; the Duster fits one person diagonally. For two people a tent is more comfortable than any of them.
Which 4x4 for a camping trip
The car is the biggest cost of wild camping in Georgia with a rental car, so match it to the valleys. For Juta, Shaori, Udabno and the lake plateaus, a Duster or Forester at $65 a day is enough. For Truso and Tusheti, take the Pajero at $80 or the Land Cruiser 200 at $135: low range, real clearance and a spare you can trust. Tell us the route when you book; for Tusheti we check the spare and the tyres with you, and five days or more gets 5% off from 5 days and 10% off from 10 days on all cars except the Toyota Prius (flat $35), and 15% off from 5 days and 25% off from 10 days on the Mazda CX-3 and Jeep Renegade, applied automatically in the booking form for pickups until 15 December 2026. Snow chains are $5 a day; tell us when you book.
What to bring
- Water: 5 litres a person a day in summer, more in the east.
- A stove and gas; cartridges are sold in Tbilisi outdoor shops, not in villages.
- Warm layers: a July night at 2,000 m can be 5 degrees.
- Cash in lari for guesthouse dinners and the odd campsite fee.
- Offline maps; phone signal stops at the valley mouth.

Questions about wild camping in Georgia with a rental car
Is wild camping legal in Georgia?
Yes, on public land outside protected core zones and fenced property. National parks have designated spots and ask you to register.
Can I take the rental car on gravel to a campsite?
Yes, in a car built for it. Take a 4x4 from our range for gravel tracks; the insurance excludes off-road driving against our instructions, so tell us the route and we say yes or suggest another car.
Are there campsites with facilities?
A few: Juta, Stepantsminda, Mestia, Omalo and the national park centres. Most of the country is wild camping or a guesthouse garden.
Is it safe?
Yes. The risks are weather and cows, not people. Camp away from riverbeds that can flood after storms.
Wild camping in Georgia with a rental car is the cheapest way to sleep under the Caucasus. Pick the right 4x4, respect the few rules, and leave the valley as you found it.
