Mestia or Kazbegi? If you have only one mountain region in your Georgia trip, this is the question. Both are spectacular, and they are very different: Kazbegi is two and a half hours from Tbilisi on a paved road; Mestia is a full day away and the best of it needs a 4x4. This post compares them by season, driving, cost and what you actually see. The detailed route guides are our Tbilisi to Kazbegi guide and the Mestia and Ushguli 4x4 guide.
Updated 9 October 2026. Prices and rules checked against our booking system on that date.

Mestia or Kazbegi is also a question of which airport you use: Tbilisi points to Kazbegi, Kutaisi points to Mestia.
Choose Kazbegi if
- You have three days or fewer. Tbilisi to Gergeti and back fits in one long day, two is comfortable.
- You are driving in winter. The Georgian Military Highway is cleared daily and Gudauri is on the way; see our Gudauri season post.
- You want the big view without a 4x4. The Gergeti church road is paved now, and the Truso valley is the optional 4x4 extra.
- You plan Armenia or Kakheti as well. Kazbegi is the only mountain region that combines easily with the east.
Choose Mestia if
- You have five days or more. Svaneti rewards slow travel: Mestia, Ushguli, the Chalaadi glacier walk, Hatsvali.
- You fly into Kutaisi. Mestia is closer to Kutaisi than to Tbilisi, and Batumi is on the way back.
- You want villages, towers and hikes rather than one famous church.
- You like gravel. The Ushguli road is the classic 4x4 day in Georgia, river crossings included in early summer.
The driving, honestly
Kazbegi is an easy drive in summer and a careful one in winter. The climb from Pasanauri to Gudauri and the Jvari pass at 2,395 m are the only serious sections, and the police close the pass for hours after heavy snow. Mestia is a long day on good roads: motorway to Zugdidi, then two hours up the Enguri gorge on a narrow, paved road with rockfall in spring. Beyond Mestia the tarmac ends. Ushguli is 45 km of gravel, two hours each way, and in May and June the river sometimes crosses the road. Our list of roads that need a 4x4 ranks both.
What it costs with a rental car
Kazbegi from Tbilisi in a Prius for three days is $105 plus $20 service fee from the city centre. Mestia and Ushguli in a Duster for five days is $309 plus the fee, because rentals of 5 days or more get 5% off from 5 days and 10% off from 10 days on all cars except the Toyota Prius (flat $35), and 15% off from 5 days and 25% off from 10 days on the Mazda CX-3 and Jeep Renegade, applied automatically in the booking form for pickups until 15 December 2026. Fuel is the other difference: Kazbegi is 300 km return, Mestia and Ushguli about 1,000 km. Every rate is on the prices page.
| Car | Daily rate | Kazbegi | Mestia and Ushguli |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Prius | $35 | Summer only, church road fine | To Mestia only, not Ushguli |
| Renault Duster | $65 | All year with winter tyres | Yes, the classic Ushguli car |
| Subaru Forester | $65 | All year | Yes |
| Mitsubishi Pajero | $80 | Storm days, low range | Yes, river crossings in June |
| Land Cruiser 200 | $135 | Comfort in any weather | Yes, the most capable |

Mestia or Kazbegi: quick answers
Can I do both in one week?
Yes, with a lot of driving: two nights in Kazbegi, the long day to Mestia via Mtskheta and Kutaisi, two nights in Mestia, then Batumi or back to Tbilisi. Our 10-day loop does exactly that with the coast and Kakheti added.
Which is better for families?
Kazbegi. Shorter drives, paved roads, a hotel with a view of the church, and Ananuri fortress on the way for the children.
Which is better for photographers?
Mestia, for the towers at dawn and Ushguli under Shkhara. Kazbegi has one world-famous frame; Svaneti has a hundred.
Is a 4x4 really needed for Ushguli?
Yes. A sedan is the wrong tool for that road, and the insurance excludes off-road use against our instructions. A Duster, Forester, Pajero or Land Cruiser is the right tool.
So: Mestia or Kazbegi? Short trip, winter or families, Kazbegi. Long trip, hiking and the 4x4 adventure, Mestia. And with ten days, both.
