03Around Kazbegi by car
- Gergeti Trinity Church: about 6 km of concrete switchbacks from Stepantsminda, fine for a normal car in dry weather. In snow or ice, walk or take a local 4x4.
- Dariali gorge and Gveleti waterfall: about 12 km towards the Russian border; the Dariali monastery is on the way. The border itself is closed to rental cars.
- Truso valley: a gravel road in a border zone, best with a 4x4 and in dry weather.
- Juta: a gravel road that can be badly damaged in places; ask locals about its condition before driving up.
04Winter: December to April
The road is cleared daily, but after heavy snow the section between Gudauri and Kobi (across the Jvari pass) can close for hours, and at times only 4x4 vehicles are allowed through. Closures are announced by the Roads Department of Georgia (georoad.ge). When the road is closed, a cable car links Gudauri and Kobi.
- Choose a 4x4 with winter tyres; add snow chains for $5 a day.
- Leave Tbilisi early and avoid Friday evenings in ski season.
- Expect slow trucks queuing for the Russian border.
- Message us the morning you leave: we will tell you what we know about the pass that day.
