Car rental in Georgia for Gulf visitors: licence and documents
Georgia accepts licences from countries that signed the Vienna Convention as they are, and several Gulf states are signatories (the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar among them), while Saudi Arabia and Oman are not. Our practical advice for everyone: bring an International Driving Permit anyway. It is cheap and quick at home, and it removes any doubt at a police stop or at the counter. Bring your passport as well. That is the whole list; there is no minimum years-of-driving rule in our terms.
Why the deposit is only $200
Gulf visitors are used to large card holds. Here the deposit is about $200, paid in cash at pickup and returned at drop-off when the car comes back in the same condition. It equals the $200 insurance deductible, which is the most you pay for a covered accident. Our post on rental car insurance in Georgia explains the cover. You pay 15% of the rental online to confirm and the rest at the car, by card or cash.
Summer in the mountains, and the heat
July and August are high season for Gulf families, and the attraction is obvious: Tbilisi is warm, Gudauri and Kazbegi are 15 degrees cooler, and Batumi has the sea. The mountain roads are paved to Gudauri, Stepantsminda, Mestia and Bakuriani, so a normal car reaches all of them in summer. For Ushguli, Tusheti or the Truso valley you need a 4x4 from our SUV range. Air conditioning is the first thing people check for car rental in Georgia for Gulf visitors in August; every car we hand over in summer has it working.
| Popular with Gulf families | Drive from Tbilisi | Car |
|---|---|---|
| Gudauri and Kazbegi | 2 to 2.5 hours | Any car in summer, 4x4 in winter |
| Kakheti, Signagi and Telavi | 1.5 to 2 hours | Sedan or crossover |
| Borjomi and Bakuriani | 2.5 hours | Sedan or crossover |
| Batumi | 5 to 6 hours | Any car; delivery at Batumi Airport possible |
| Mestia and Ushguli | 8 hours (overnight in Mestia) | 4x4 for Ushguli |
Automatic, seats and luggage
Most cars in the fleet are automatic; tell us if you need one and we confirm the exact car before you pay. Families of six to eight travel in the Toyota Sienna, the Nissan Quest or a Mercedes Vito, and larger groups book the Sprinter with a driver. For a premium stay, the Premium range has the Range Rovers, the Escalade and the Maserati, bookable online. Child seats cost $5 a day; tell us the ages when you book.
Pickup at Tbilisi Airport at any hour
Flights from Dubai, Riyadh, Kuwait and Doha often land late at night. Our colleague meets every booked flight at arrivals with a sign, 24 hours a day, for a $30 fee. Give us the flight number and we track it. The Tbilisi Airport page explains the meeting point step by step.
Practical notes
- Language. Our team speaks English; Arabic signage is common in Tbilisi restaurants but not on the roads. Google Maps works everywhere.
- Halal food. Easy in Tbilisi and Batumi; in the mountains, ask for vegetarian dishes, which Georgian cuisine does very well.
- Fines. Speed cameras are everywhere; fines reach us as the registered owner and are passed on at face value.
- Long stays. Rentals of 5 days or more get 5% off from 5 days and 10% off from 10 days on all cars except the Toyota Prius (flat $35), and 15% off from 5 days and 25% off from 10 days on the Mazda CX-3 and Jeep Renegade, applied automatically in the booking form for pickups until 15 December 2026. The long-term page has the totals.
- Borders. Armenia is possible with our documents; Turkey and Azerbaijan are not.

Questions about car rental in Georgia for Gulf visitors
Is an IDP really required with a UAE or Saudi licence?
For a Saudi licence, yes. For the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar the licence is accepted on its own, but an IDP next to it makes every police stop a ten-second affair, so we recommend it.
Do I pay the deposit by card?
No, the deposit is paid in cash at pickup, there is no card hold. It is returned at drop-off.
Is Georgia safe for families driving on their own?
Yes. Read our honest post on whether it is safe to drive in Georgia for the few habits that matter.
Can I book a car for three weeks in summer?
Yes, online up to 30 days, and longer by WhatsApp. Summer is busy, so book the SUV or minivan a few weeks ahead.
Car rental in Georgia for Gulf visitors comes down to three things: licence plus IDP, a small deposit, and the right car for the mountains. We handle the rest at arrivals.
