Hybrid Car Rental in Georgia: The Prius, Fuel Savings and Where to Drive It

Fuel is the biggest cost of a road trip after the rental itself. That is why our most booked car is a hybrid. If you are looking for a hybrid car rental in Georgia, this post explains what we offer, how much fuel you save on real routes, and where a hybrid is the right car and where it is not. Rates and availability are on the Toyota Prius page.

Hybrid car rental in Georgia: the Toyota Prius

Our hybrid is the Toyota Prius, at $35 a day for any length of rental. It is a self-charging hybrid. So there is no cable and no charging station to find. The battery charges while you brake and coast, and the petrol engine does the rest. You drive it like any automatic car.

The Prius is also one of the most common cars in Georgia, so every mechanic knows it. It is quiet in Tbilisi traffic, easy to park in the old town, and comfortable on the motorway. Insurance and unlimited mileage are included, and a second driver is free.

How much fuel a hybrid saves

A Prius typically uses around 4 to 5 litres per 100 km in mixed driving. A large petrol SUV often needs twice that or more. On a short city break the difference is small. On a road trip, however, hybrid car rental in Georgia adds up to real savings. Here are rough fuel needs for popular routes.

RouteDistancePrius (approx.)Large SUV (approx.)
Tbilisi to Mtskheta and back50 km2 to 3 litres5 to 7 litres
Tbilisi to Sighnaghi and Telavi loop250 km10 to 13 litres25 to 30 litres
Tbilisi to Kazbegi and back310 km13 to 16 litres30 to 40 litres
Tbilisi to Batumi370 km15 to 19 litres35 to 45 litres
A one-week loop of the country1,000 km40 to 50 litres100 litres or more

These are estimates, because traffic, load and air conditioning all change the result. Still, the pattern holds. Over a week, a hybrid often saves the price of one or two rental days. Check the pump for current fuel prices, because they move with the market.

Where a hybrid is the right car

  • Tbilisi and Mtskheta. Stop-and-go traffic is where a hybrid saves most.
  • Kakheti wine country. Paved roads, short hops between wineries. The Telavi pickup point saves the drive from Tbilisi.
  • Tbilisi to Batumi. A long motorway day, cheap in a Prius.
  • Kazbegi in summer. Paved to Gergeti church, and the hybrid saves fuel on the descent.
  • Kutaisi, Borjomi and the caves. Paved roads to every major sight in the west.

Where a hybrid is not the right car

The Prius sits low. So it is not for gravel mountain roads. Skip it for Ushguli, Tusheti, the Truso valley and Juta. In winter, it is also the wrong car for Gudauri and the Jvari pass, where the police may allow only 4x4s or chains. For those trips, see our list of roads that need a 4x4 and the 4x4 and SUV rental page.

Mixing city days and mountain days? We can suggest a split, for example a Prius for Tbilisi and Kakheti and a 4x4 for one mountain week. Message us on WhatsApp (+995 591 89 60 60) and we will plan a custom route with you: the right car for the roads, pickup and drop-off in different cities, and honest advice on driving times.

What a hybrid rental costs

The Prius costs $35 a day. Add the handover fee of each end and the $20 service fee. In Tbilisi city centre the handover is free. At Tbilisi Airport it is $30 per end. So seven days with airport pickup and return come to 7 x $35 + $30 + $30 + $20, which is $325. You pay 15% online, and the rest at the car. Our breakdown of the full cost to rent a car in Georgia covers deposit, extras and fuel rules.

Fuel tips for a hybrid car rental in Georgia

  • Ask for "Premium" or "Super" (95 octane) or "Regular" (92). An attendant fills the tank.
  • Return the tank as you got it. Our fuel rule is full to full.
  • Use the Eco mode in town. It smooths the throttle and saves fuel.
  • Brake early and gently. The battery recovers energy when you slow down.
  • Fill up before long mountain stretches. Stations are frequent in the valleys, but rare above them.

Prefer electric with a driver?

For a private tour or a transfer in a fully electric car, we also offer Tesla Model Y tours with a driver. It suits a day in Kakheti or an airport transfer in comfort. For self-drive, the Prius remains our choice for hybrid car rental in Georgia.
