The Toyota Prius in Georgia is our cheapest car at a flat $35 a day, and the one guests ask the most questions about. Can it go to Kazbegi? Is it really a hybrid? Why is it the only car without the autumn discount? Here are the honest answers, with the roads it suits and the ones it does not.

Toyota Prius in Georgia: the car
| Toyota Prius (2015-2016) | |
|---|---|
| Price | $35 a day, any length, no discount but no surprises |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive, automatic, 1.8 petrol hybrid |
| Fuel use | About 5.5 l/100 km, the lowest in the fleet |
| Seats and bags | 4 people, two large suitcases in the hatchback boot |
| Pickup | Tbilisi city free, Tbilisi Airport $30 per end |
Half of the taxis in Tbilisi are the same car, which tells you two things. It is reliable, and every mechanic in the country knows it. The same terms as every car: insurance (CDW and TPL) and unlimited mileage included, a $20 service fee per booking, a refundable $200 cash deposit at pickup, drivers aged 22 and over, 15% paid online and the rest at pickup, free cancellation up to 48 hours before.
Where the Prius makes sense
- Tbilisi and Mtskheta. Quiet in traffic, easy to park, and the hybrid shines in city stop-and-go.
- Kakheti. Sighnaghi, Telavi and the wineries, all on asphalt. The Gombori pass is paved and fine in a Prius outside the snow days.
- Tbilisi to Batumi. 370 km on the highway for about 20 litres of petrol. Read Tbilisi to Batumi by car for the route.
- Kutaisi, Borjomi, the coast. Every main road in Georgia is paved, so the Prius covers most of the classic 7-day road trip.
Where it does not
The Prius sits low and drives the front wheels only. So we say no to three kinds of road: long gravel (Juta, Ushguli, Tusheti, David Gareja's last stretch), snow-covered passes (the Jvari pass to Gudauri from December to March), and river fords of any kind. Kazbegi in summer and early autumn is fine, because the road is paved to Stepantsminda. Kazbegi in January is a Renegade or Duster job. Our post on roads that need a 4x4 has the full list.
Toyota Prius in Georgia: your questions
Can I drive the Prius to Kazbegi?
From April to November, yes. The road over the Jvari pass is asphalt and the Prius copes with the climb. In winter we advise a 4x4, and the police may turn front-wheel-drive cars back at Kvesheti when chains are required.
Is it really a hybrid, and do I need to charge it?
Yes, and no. The Prius charges its own battery while driving and braking. You only fill the petrol tank, and you return it full, the same as every car.
Why is there no discount on the Prius?
Because $35 is already the floor. The autumn offer (5% to 25% off the other cars) leaves the Prius at a flat $35 for any length, including a month: $1,050 for 30 days.
How much luggage fits?
Two large suitcases plus hand luggage with the parcel shelf in place. For four people with four big bags, take the Ford Fusion or a minivan instead.
Can I take the Prius to Armenia?
Ask us first. Cross-border trips need the $70 document option and a car we choose for the route; for Armenia we usually suggest the Renegade or the CX-3.
Does it have winter tyres?
Yes, in season. Winter tyres make the Prius safe on cold, wet and lightly snowy roads in Tbilisi, Kakheti and the west. They do not turn it into a mountain car.
Want the Prius but not sure about one road? Send us your route. If one stretch is too much for the Prius, we will say so and suggest a 4x4 for that part of the trip or for the whole rental. Message us on WhatsApp (+995 591 89 60 60) and we will plan a custom route with you. We suggest the right car for the roads, pickup and drop-off in different cities, and honest driving times.
In short, the Toyota Prius in Georgia is the right car for cities, Kakheti and the highway to the coast, at $35 a day with insurance included. For snow and gravel, book a 4x4 and keep the Prius for the rest.
