Where the X-Terra is the right car
- Tusheti. The Abano pass (2,850 m), four to five hours of dirt road, open roughly June to October. A frame 4x4 with low range is what the road asks for. See Tusheti by 4x4.
- Juta, Truso and the Kazbegi tracks. Gravel valleys above the Jvari pass (2,395 m).
- David Gareja and Vashlovani. The semi-desert tracks of eastern Kakheti, where clearance matters more than comfort.
- Racha and Svaneti. The Shaori lake road, Ushguli on gravel, the Zagari pass in late summer.
- Camping trips. The square boot and the roof rack take tents and coolers; read our post on wild camping in Georgia with a rental car.
Where we suggest another car
Tbilisi, Kakheti wineries, the coast and the Batumi highway: all asphalt, where the X-Terra is thirsty and firm. A Duster at $65 or a RAV4 at $70 is the better car for those. For five people with bags, the Duster's fifth seat decides it.
Nissan X-Terra in Georgia: your questions
Is it too old?
It is a 2006-2014 car, inspected before every handover like every car we deliver. The X-Terra was built as a truck, and the trade for the price is an older cabin without modern electronics.
X-Terra or Duster?
For Tusheti, Shatili and long gravel, the X-Terra: frame, low range, clearance. For everything else, the Duster: five seats, less fuel, softer ride, $10 less. If the trip mixes both, the Duster handles Ushguli and Juta fine.
How much fuel does it use?
About 12 litres per 100 km on asphalt and 15 or more on the passes, roughly 130 litres for a 1,000 km week. Fill up in Telavi or Pshaveli before Tusheti; there is no fuel station up there.
Is it automatic?
Yes, like every car in the fleet.
Can I take it to Armenia?
Ask us first. Cross-border trips need the $70 document option and our agreement on the car; for Armenia we usually suggest the Renegade or the CX-3.
Planning Tusheti or a camping loop in the X-Terra? Send us the dates and the route. We confirm the car, the pass status and the roof rack, and we tell you honestly if a Duster would do. Message us on WhatsApp (+995 591 89 60 60) and we will plan a custom route with you. We suggest the right car for the roads, pickup and drop-off in different cities, and honest driving times.
In short, the Nissan X-Terra in Georgia is the $75 frame 4x4 for Tusheti, the Kazbegi tracks and camping trips. For asphalt and five people, the Duster is the smarter $65.
