Where the Forester shines
- Snow on asphalt. Gudauri, Bakuriani and the Gombori pass in winter, where permanent all-wheel drive and winter tyres make the car calm. See winter tyres on a rental car in Georgia.
- Racha. The road from Kutaisi to Oni and on to Shovi, 3 hours of mountain asphalt with a few gravel sections. Read Racha by car.
- Kazbegi and Juta. The Jvari pass in every season and the 20 km of gravel to Juta in summer.
- Kakheti back roads. Wineries reached by dirt lanes, Lagodekhi, and the David Gareja road.
- Svaneti. Mestia on asphalt and Ushguli in dry weather; the Forester has done it many times.
Where we suggest a bigger car
Tusheti and Shatili, for the same reason as the RAV4: a crossover with a long day of rocks and river crossings is a risk we would rather you did not take. The Pajero or the Prado is the right tool there; our Tusheti by 4x4 page explains why.
Subaru Forester in Georgia: your questions
Forester, Duster or RAV4?
All three are $65 to $70. The Duster has a lockable 4x4 mode for mud and the biggest clearance. The RAV4 is the most economical. The Forester has the best all-wheel drive on snowy asphalt and the most comfortable seats of the three. Pick by the road: mud, Duster; highway, RAV4; snow, Forester.
Is the Forester good in winter?
Yes, it is one of the best winter cars in the fleet. Permanent all-wheel drive, winter tyres in season and chains for $5 a day take it to Gudauri and Bakuriani without drama.
How much fuel does it use?
About 12 litres per 100 km, more than the RAV4. Over a 1,000 km week that is roughly 30 litres more than a RAV4, so the fuel bill matters more than the $5 difference in daily rate.
Is the boot big enough for ski bags?
Yes, with the rear seats folded, or on the roof rails with the seats up. Three suitcases fit with five people on board.
Can I take it to Armenia?
Ask us first. Cross-border trips need the $70 document option and our agreement on the car; for Armenia we usually suggest the Renegade or the CX-3.

So the Subaru Forester in Georgia is the all-wheel-drive car for snowy asphalt, Racha and Kazbegi, at $65 a day with five comfortable seats. For mud, take the Duster; for the Abano pass, take a Pajero.
