Where the Highlander works best
- Tbilisi Airport to anywhere. Seven people and their bags in one car instead of two taxis. The $30 airport pickup covers a colleague meeting the flight at any hour.
- Bakuriani and Gudauri. Ski rack on, seven inside, 2 to 3 hours from Tbilisi on paved roads, with chains in the boot for the last climb. See Bakuriani ski season by car.
- Kazbegi. The Jvari pass is fine for the Highlander in every season except a closed-road snowstorm.
- Kakheti and Batumi. Long highway days are where the V6 and the quiet cabin shine. Tbilisi to Batumi is 370 km, 5 to 6 hours.
Where it is the wrong car
Tusheti, Shatili and Ushguli: it is long, heavy and low for a 4x4, and the third row does not enjoy four hours of dirt road. For those, split the group into two Dusters or take a Prado. For eight or more people, the Toyota Sienna and the Sprinter with driver are the options; our van rental post compares them.
Toyota Highlander in Georgia: your questions
Do seven adults really fit?
Seven adults fit for a two-hour drive; the third row is best for children or for the airport run. For seven adults over a full day, the Sienna is more comfortable.
Highlander or Sienna?
The Highlander has all-wheel drive and goes to the mountains; the Sienna has eight seats and a huge boot but is a front-wheel-drive van. Skiing: Highlander. Coast and cities with lots of luggage: Sienna.
Highlander or two small cars?
Two Renegades with the autumn offer cost about $98 a day for 10 days, against $63 for one Highlander. One car is cheaper, two cars give you two plans. Families with teenagers often prefer two.
Can I get child seats?
Yes. Tell us the children's ages when you book and we fit the seats before handover.
Is it hard to drive in Tbilisi?
It is a big car, but automatic and with a camera. Park in the paid city zones rather than the old town lanes; our driving in Tbilisi post explains how.
Can I take it to Armenia?
Ask us first. Cross-border trips need the $70 document option and our agreement on the car. For Armenia we usually suggest the Renegade or the CX-3, though a Highlander is possible for a group.
Travelling as a group of six or seven? Tell us the dates, the ages and the luggage. We will say whether the Highlander fits or whether two cars or a van make the trip easier. Message us on WhatsApp (+995 591 89 60 60) and we will plan a custom route with you. We suggest the right car for the roads, pickup and drop-off in different cities, and honest driving times.
In short, the Toyota Highlander in Georgia is the one-car answer for a family of six or seven on asphalt and ski roads, at $70 a day. For dirt passes or eight people, we will point you to the right alternative.
